Alternator dying? We test it before we replace it.
Battery light on, lights dimming at idle, a car that dies while it drives, or a new battery that keeps going flat. The alternator charges the car while it runs. When it stops, everything runs down. We test it, replace it where the car sits, and quote it in writing first.

You notice
- The battery or charging warning light is on.
- Dim or flickering lights, slow wipers, a radio that cuts out.
- A whine or growl from the front of the engine that rises with revs.
- A jump-started car that dies again within minutes.
What we do
- 01Test charging output and ripple, and check the drive belt and tensioner.
- 02Replace the alternator with a unit matched to your car's output.
- 03Check the battery afterwards — a failing alternator often takes it down too.
- 04Confirm the charging system is healthy before we leave.
Where it happens
Driveway or parking lot; if the car has died on the road we can often get to it there. Have the key and the year, make and model ready.
By California law, on every job
- A written estimate — and your OK — before any work starts.
- Nothing above the estimate without your authorization.
- An itemized invoice that says whether parts were new, used or rebuilt.

Car won't start? Often it's this. Cleaned and tightened where it sits.

Alternator — straight answers
No. A failing alternator drains a new battery just as quickly. If you have replaced the battery and the car still dies, the alternator is the first thing to test.
You do not need to — we come to the car. Driving on a failing alternator risks stopping in traffic when the battery runs down, so let it sit and call.
If the belt or tensioner is worn we tell you, with the cost on the estimate, and it is a good moment to do it because the belt is already off. If it is fine, it goes back on.
