Do mobile mechanics do smog checks in California? No — here is why, and what we can do

No. In California a Smog Check can only be performed by a licensed smog technician at a licensed station, inside a building — a mobile mechanic is not allowed to do one, anywhere. What a mobile mechanic can do is find and fix the fault that would fail it, so you arrive at the station ready.

The rule

California's Smog Check program (Health and Safety Code §44014 and §44032; 16 CCR §3340.15) requires the inspection to be done by a licensed technician at a licensed Smog Check station with the state's equipment, in a building. A mobile service does not meet that, so anyone offering a "mobile smog check" is offering something that does not exist legally.

What a mobile mechanic can do

A check-engine light fails the test before the tailpipe is even measured, so the useful job is upstream: read the codes and the live data, find the actual fault (a sensor, a coil, a vacuum leak, a loose cap), fix it, and make sure the car's readiness monitors have run. That we do in your driveway.

Then you go to a licensed station for the official Smog Check. We are not one, we do not pretend to be, and we do not sell a "pre-smog" anything — just the diagnosis that makes the real test pass.

Related questions

  • Get the fault diagnosed and fixed first — a lit light fails the test — then drive enough for the car's monitors to run, then go to a licensed Smog Check station. We do the first part where the car sits.

  • Clearing the light resets the readiness monitors, which the station reads as "not ready", so that fails too. The only thing that passes is fixing the cause; that is what we do.

Fixed before the day starts.
