Can brakes be replaced at home? Yes — here is what it takes

Brake pads and rotors are a wheel-off job, and a mobile mechanic does it in a driveway or a level parking lot with a jack, stands and the right parts. What it needs is a flat, solid surface — not a lift.

What the job needs

A level, solid surface the car can be safely jacked on — a driveway, a flat parking lot, a quiet level street. Sloped streets and soft ground are where we say no and find a better spot with you.

The right pads, rotors and hardware for your car, which is why we ask for the year, make and model when you book, and measure before we quote.

What is included

Measuring pads and rotors; replacing what is worn (pads, rotors, or both, with the hardware); checking calipers, hoses and fluid while the wheel is off; bedding the new brakes in on a short road test; and the itemized invoice, with your old parts if you want them.

When a shop is the right answer

A seized caliper that needs a press, a master cylinder, or a brake-line job that needs the car up on a lift for a long time — we tell you right away if yours is one of those rather than starting something that cannot be finished where it sits.

Related questions

  • The rotors are measured and inspected: if they are within specification and smooth, pads alone is an honest answer; if they are scored, warped or thin, they go with the pads. The estimate says which.

  • Grinding means the pads are gone and metal is wearing the rotor, so stopping distance grows with every mile. Keep the drive to a minimum, or do not drive at all — we come to the car.

Fixed before the day starts.
